Welcome and what’s about Coaching?

Hi and welcome to “Coaching with Yuhsin”. As the first blog of this website, I would like to introduce a bit about myself, what’s about coaching, and why I started this coaching journey. Before you go on reading, feel free to grab a cup of matcha or chai or whatever makes you feel at peace. Ready? Now, let’s begin.

About Me

I’m Yuhsin Cheng, a strategic finance leader with over 8 years of experience driving business growth at leading technology companies. I've had the privilege of working on cutting-edge initiatives in AI, Cloud, and other transformative areas.

Amidst the excitement of these industries’ evolvements and career adventures, I realized that true fulfillment comes from empowering others to reach their full potential. This belief led me to become a Co-active Coach, where I can leverage my experience and passion to guide individuals on their own journeys of growth and transformation.

My Personal Journey with Coaching

Coaching, at first sounds like someone that only appears on the sports field, like Steve Kerr. Until I started to receive coaching personally while I was making career transition during my MBA, I started to experience the power of career coaching.

Through the coaching process, I discovered that the answers I had been seeking externally were actually within me all along. As the values and insights emerge internally, I found it easier and more nature for me to stick to them and implement the next steps.

So What’s About Coaching?

Coaching for me is to support the person to unleash their maximum potential, from either building self-awareness or making changes that the person wishes.

There are many framework and practice for coaching. The current framework I adopt is the co-active coaching framework. Co-active coaching is built on the fundamental belief that people are naturally creative, resourceful, and whole. Unlike traditional coaching methods, the "co" in co-active represents the collaborative partnership between coach and client, while "active" emphasizes the dynamic engagement and forward momentum that characterizes this approach.

In practice, co-active coaching may leverage tools such as powerful questioning, inquiry, and challenging, with the goal of creating a safe space for the person to explore their thoughts, feelings, and aspirations while holding them accountable for the actions they choose to take.

Coaching vs. Advising vs. Mentoring

It’s also important to make a distinction between coaching with advising and mentoring.

When you work with an advisor, you're typically seeking their expertise and specific recommendations. They assess your situation and tell you what they think you should do based on their knowledge and experience.

Mentors, on the other hand, share their personal experiences and wisdom gained from their journey. They've walked the path you're on and can offer guidance based on what worked (or didn't work) for them.

Coaching is fundamentally different. A coach doesn't give advice or share personal experiences. As a coach, I act as a catalyst for my client’s discovery process. I believe that every person has the answers within themselves. Simply put, while mentors and advisors tell you what to do, coaches help you figure out what you want to do and how to get there.
